敬老の日　Respect for the Aged Day

The third Monday of September is designated as Respect for the Aged Day. The character “敬” in “敬老” (respect for the aged) is, as any Japanese learner would know, the same “敬” used in honorific language. This kanji signifies to mean respect for the other person with modesty.
 Respect for the Aged Day is a day when people express their gratitude to their elders.
 On the day itself, families gather, exchange gifts, and express their appreciation.

九月の第三月曜日は、敬老の日と決まっています。敬老の「敬」の字は、日本語学習者ならすぐに分かると思いますが　敬語の「敬」です。この漢字の意味は、自分は、慎んだ行動をして　相手をうやまう気持ちを持つという意味です。そして、敬老の日とは、「年長者に日頃の感謝を伝え、その長寿を祝う日」です。
敬老の日当日は家族が集まったり、贈り物をしたりするなどして感謝の気持ちを伝えます。
