January 12th, is Coming-of-Age Day.
Coming-of-Age Day is a ceremony hosted by local governments and other organizations to celebrate young people turning 20 and encourage their awareness as adults.
Every year on Coming of Age Day, the second Monday of January, commemorative ceremonies are held in municipalities nationwide. Although the 2022 revision of the Civil Code lowered the age of adulthood from 20 to 18, most municipalities continue to hold ceremonies for those turning 20 as before.
On that day, you’ll see many people dressed in furisode kimonos or suits.
Purpose of Coming-of-Age Ceremonies
Coming-of-Age Ceremonies welcome new adults into society and encourage them as they embark on this new chapter.
Awareness as an Adult: It symbolizes recognizing social responsibilities and embarking on an independent life.
Expression of Gratitude: It also serves as an occasion to express gratitude to family and the local community.
Reunion with Old Friends: It provides an opportunity to reunite with friends since junior high school graduation, functioning like a class reunion.

成人式とは、20歳を迎える若者を祝福し、大人としての自覚を促すために地方自治体などが主催する式典です。
毎年、1月第2月曜日の成人の日には、全国各地の自治体で記念式典が行なわれます。2022年の民法改正により、成人年齢は20歳から18歳に引き下げられましたが、ほとんどの自治体では、従来どおり20歳を対象に式典が開かれています。
その日は、振袖やスーツなどに身を包んだ人の姿を多く見かけます。
成人式の目的
成人式は、新成人を社会の一員として迎え入れ、その門出を激励する意味合いがあります。
大人としての自覚: 社会的責任を自覚し、自立した人生を歩むことを象徴します。
